Our Small Hours: How To Eat Real Foods Away From Home--Parties ...

So far we've talked about how to eat real food away from home on road trips and on vacation. ?This time we're sticking a little closer to home and will tackle the complication of eating real food while visiting with friends and family for parties or get-togethers.

Real Food Parties

When my husband and I realized the incredible benefits of a real food diet and made the commitment to eat a real food diet, one of the first things we discussed was how to handle get-togethers with family and friends. ?It was difficult to find a place in our diet for processed, packaged foods and items that most American think are healthy such as meats from the grocery store, vegetable oils and improperly prepared grain products. ?Still, the last thing we wanted to do was be "the family with the special diet"

In fact, we didn't (and still don't) want to share much about our diet at all because the amount of information-gathering involved in our decision to eat real food could not be easily shared in a casual conversation. ?More than anything we wanted to blend in and not have friends and family think we were "just on a diet", but at the same time not compromise our health for the sake of fitting in. ?

Here are four tips for eating real food at parties or get-togethers.

1. ?Remember the 80/20 rule. ?Having a handful of chips at a party is not going to be a detriment to your health if you are eating well 80 per cent of the time. ?If you are like most real foodies, you don't keep factory-food in your home. ?You eat the right fats and sweeteners and have vetted your sources of meat and other animal products. ?Unless you have allergies or know that a certain food will make you feel sick if you eat it, then have a piece of cake or a slice of restaurant-chain pizza.

2. ?Overlook the processed food and seek the real foods. ?Most parties have a fruit tray. ?So maybe it's not organic. ?Maybe you won't fall over dead this once. ?If there is fruit, there is likely cheese. ?Don't focus on all of the food you would never let pass your lips. ?Instead, find something--even if it's just one thing--that you can enjoy without guilt.

3. ?Bring your own food. ?Now, this doesn't mean that you show up with a container of something just for yourself while looking down your nose at the spread the host or hostess has provided. ?No, this means you offer to bring a dish. ?Share your favorite real food snack or dish with the others and you may spark an interest in real food!

4. ?Eat before you go. ?Not eating at a party doesn't exactly help you to blend in, but it is an option if you simply cannot stomach the idea of eating many of the Standard American Diet (SAD) foods that may be available.

More than anything I want to stress the importance of not being a food snob.? Actually, be a food snob--in your own home and in any situation where you won't?potentially?hurt the feelings of people you care about. ?If people ask why you make the food choices you make, then tell them. ?If not, then keep it to yourself. ?Remember that many people simply do not have the information or the understanding of how to incorporate real foods into their diets. ?And even if they did, eating real food is a pretty big paradigm shift for most. ?It takes time to figure it all out. ?Don't forget that once you tell people you are a real foodie, you are under the microscope. ?Your every bite is up for scrutinization. ?If you ever decide to sneak in an Oreo, you lose your credibility even if you've eaten perfectly for a decade!

I hope I've driven home one important point in this series: ?Follow the 80/20 rule and enjoy life. ?I think most real foodies find ourselves doing an even higher percentage of real food than 80% once we learn the ropes and find more sources of real food. ?Relax and enjoy life. ?What's the point of eating such a healthy diet if you're not going to enjoy life?

Halloween Cooking Ideas | E Publishing

Whether you are cooking for a feast of adults for Halloween or looking for some great kid approved recipes there are plenty of resources online for some excellent spooky recipes for All Hallows Eve. There are some basic rules that will help the meal preparation and presentation go a little more smoothly if you?ll follow them. Hopefully that advice below will help you get through your spook fest and enjoy a great dinner too.

Most people who have a huge Halloween party will find that they will be interrupted throughout the evening with trick or treaters seeking the perfect treat. While we want to enjoy the ghosts, goblins, kings, and princesses gracing our stoop we also do not want to burn the food we are working hard to prepare. For this reason we need to select foods that require little attention during the preparation process rather than foods that are quite time consuming and attention demanding.

Crock pots are a blessing to have around on a night like Halloween. You can begin the food cooking well before the little goblins begin their appointed rounds and have the dishes you?ve prepared kept warm while you?re waiting for guests to arrive or doling out treats at your front door, whatever the necessity of the moment may be. You can even cook normal favorites in the crock pot or cook them on the stove and use the crock pot to keep them warm.

Some excellent spooky crock pot ideas include spaghetti brains. Prepare the sauce and the noodles ahead of time separately. Mix the sauce in the noodles and keep them warming together in the crock pot. Meatball eyes are another crock pot favorite. Stuff the meatballs with one stuffed olive eyeball and place in spaghetti sauce. Bat wings (which are actually chicken wings) with your favorite sauce are also excellent in the crock pot. Sloppy Joes can also be prepared and stored in the crock pot then served open faced over buns with small triangle cheese slices for eye and a pickle for eyeballs and a large triangle of cheese for the mouth.

Another great Halloween cooking idea is to prepare as much as possible ahead of time. There are all kinds of frightening and ghastly goodies that can be made ahead of time and stored for the big day. Make your spooky offerings such as dips that can be made cold and used for veggies, which can also be chopped ahead of time, can be made ahead of time and stored in the fridge for the big day. Cookies can be baked and decorated and stored in advance. Devilled egg white mice can be made earlier in the day and stored in the fridge on waxed paper.

The Internet is full of great recipe ideas for delicious and devious Halloween desserts, snacks, and treats. There are far too many to try them all. However, if you have favorite foods that are easy to prepare and a good party food you might want to search the net for a manner of making the food more appropriate to a Halloween theme. You can make your own pizza a little spookier by decorating it in a manner that is spooky or painting pictures, such as a jack o lantern face with pizza sauce. There are plenty of things you can do to raise the fear factor even on family favorites if you use a little creativity and give it a fancy name (like spaghetti brains).

The most important thing about Halloween as a holiday is that it gives children of all ages the perfect excuse to use their imaginations and play pretend. The food you cook doesn?t have to be too terribly spooky in order to be a perfect fit for the theme of the day. A few simple adjustments, a little dash of food color, and a lot of imagination can make any meal so much more Halloween worthy in the end.

Celebrity-run online stores punished @ HanCinema :: The Korean ...

The Fair Trade Commission (FTC) is imposing a total fine of 38 million won ($33,200) on six online shopping malls run by celebrities, including those managed by popular female singer Baek Ji-young and female actor Jin Jae-yeong.

The move came after the commission announced its plans for the second half of the year last week, saying that it aims to build a safer e-commerce environment for online consumers as they have to pay up front before receiving their goods.

Iamyuri Mall, run by Baek and Yuri, a member of the co-ed band Cool, are accused of blocking customers from sharing information about products by positing fake reviews written by its employees masquerading as shoppers.

Almost 1,000 false reviews were found to have been posted since April last year. The job of penning them was bestowed as punishment on staff who turned up late to the office, at a rate of five reviews per infraction, the FTC said.

Others, including Evajunie and Amai, are accused of providing misleading information.

All six malls, including Shopgirls, Lotoco, are accused of refusing refunds on silk products, which the watchdog said was illegal.

"These celebrities' shops have more influence over teenagers as they are more sensitive about following the latest trend, and they are heavily influenced by the celebrities they worship", said an FTC official. "So this measure the commission is taking will work as a stepping stone to protect consumers' rights".

The commission said that regulating the malls will also serve as a wake-up call for owners of offline shopping malls. It anticipates that other malls which have violated the e-commerce law will correct their wrongdoing before falling prey to a similar crackdown.

"The celebrities-owned shops are very popular, so making them follow the e-commerce law will have a ripple effect on other competitors", said the FTC.

By way of contrition, all six offline shopping malls have been ordered to post their wrongdoings on their respective Web sites for a period of up to seven days.

The commission is set to continue monitoring around 130 other online malls managed by celebrities that escaped the attention of the recent probe.

Oregon cave discovery suggests lost ancient American culture (+video)

Ancient stone projectile points and fossilized feces suggest a previously unknown culture that existed on the West Coast some 13,000 years ago.?

By Wynne Parry,?LiveScience / July 12, 2012

Displayed in the hand of University of Oregon archaeologist Dennis Jenkins are three bases for Western Stemmed projectiles from the Paisley Caves in Oregon. The bases date to some 13,000 years ago.

Ancient stone projectile points discovered in a Central Oregon cave complex have cast new light on the identity of the first Americans.

The video was done in conjunction with a publication in the July 13, 2012, issue of the journal Science.

While scientists agree they crossed the Bering Strait during an ice age, no one knows the identity of the first people to spread across the North American continent.

For some time, these first Americans were believed to have belong to a single group, called the Clovis culture, named for the New Mexican site where their distinctive, 13,000-year-old projectile points were first found.

However, some have questioned this theory, and these newly discovered projectile points, the sort of stone tips added to spears, appear to add weight to these questions.

These stone points, a type known as Western Stemmed points, are narrower and lack the distinctive flute, or shallow groove, found on Clovis points. Researchers believe the two types of points represent different technologies, produced by different cultures.

"This brings into focus the concept that other people or perhaps even multiple waves of people bringing other technologies were certainly involved in the first colonization [of the Americas]," said researcher Dennis Jenkins, an archaeologist at the University of Oregon, in a podcast issued by the journal Science, where the work is published. ?[How Fighting Evolved: 10 Weapons That Changed Combat]

Dating these Western stemmed points accurately was key, since others like them have been found elsewhere; they are common on the U.S. West Coast and in the Great Basin of Nevada, Utah, Idaho, Oregon and California.

These are generally believed to be younger than Clovis points. However, researchers have had difficulty finding materials that can be reliably dated at the Western Stemmed point sites, Jenkins said during a press conference yesterday (July 11).?

Archaeologists often look at the decay of radioactive carbon atoms within organic material to determine its age. In Oregon's Paisley Caves, where the four new Western stemmed points showed up, the researchers found some of the ancient organic material they needed, most notably, in coprolites, or dried feces, carrying human DNA.?

The coprolites appeared to have been left behind at about the same time as the nearby projectile points.

Radiocarbon dating put the coprolites and other organic samples located near the points at more than 13,000 years old. The team examined the sedimentary layers and the artifacts to determine if the sediment, and as a result the timeline preserved as new layers are laid down, had been disrupted or if the samples had been contaminated.

As a result, they determined that the projectile points ? which were broken and appear to have been cast aside as garbage ? were as old or older than Clovis points found elsewhere.

"The radiocarbon dates we got have answered the question, are Western stemmed points as old as Clovis. It's been debated since the 1970s, and we have established that fact beyond question," Jenkins said in the podcast. "It certainly reinforces or substantiates, if you will, the concept that there were multiple cultural influences here during the Pleistocene [when the Americas were first colonized]."

The research is detailed in Friday's (July 13) issue of the journal Science.?

Lebanon play Mexico in the Bowl finals in World University Cup

BEIRUT: After suffering early defeats to Namibia, Poland, France and Canada in the World University Cup, Lebanon will play Mexico in the Bowl finals on the final day of action Friday.

From their early encounters with some of the biggest teams in this tournament, Lebanon?s fitness has proved to be their downfall against well-drilled and experienced sides.

Lebanon had to make a number of replacements in the third game versus Namibia due to injuries.

Lebanon had a full day of well deserved rest Thursday, before their final game where they hope to beat the Mexicans, who are no walk over as Malaysia found out in the early rounds.

No matter what is the result of the bowl final, the national team will go back to Lebanon with much more experience then when they arrived that a number of players will put to use in the UAE International 7s in early November as well as the Dubai 7s in late November.

The team will arrive back in Lebanon Sunday, 15 July.

ScienceDaily (July 11, 2012) ? Scientists have assembled the most detailed chronology to date of the human brain's long, slow slide into full-blown Alzheimer's disease.

The timeline, developed through research led by scientists at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, appears July 11 in The New England Journal of Medicine.

As part of an international research partnership known as the Dominantly Inherited Alzheimer's Network (DIAN), scientists at Washington University and elsewhere evaluated a variety of pre-symptomatic markers of Alzheimer's disease in 128 subjects from families genetically predisposed to develop the disorder. Individuals in the study have a 50 percent chance of inheriting one of three mutations that are certain to cause Alzheimer's, often at an unusually young age.

Using medical histories of the subjects' parents to estimate the age of the onset of symptoms for the study participants, the scientists assembled a timeline of changes in the brain leading to the memory loss and cognitive decline that characterizes Alzheimer's. The earliest of these changes, a drop in spinal fluid levels of the key ingredient of Alzheimer's brain plaques, can be detected 25 years before the anticipated age of onset.

"A series of changes begins in the brain decades before the symptoms of Alzheimer's disease are noticed by patients or families, and this cascade of events may provide a timeline for symptomatic onset," says first author Randall Bateman, MD, the Charles F. and Joanne Knight Distinguished Professor of Neurology at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis. "As we learn more about the origins of Alzheimer's to plan preventive treatments, this Alzheimer's timeline will be invaluable for successful drug trials."

As an example, Bateman says that the new data show that plaques become visible on brain scans 15 years before memory problems become apparent. Researchers in the DIAN plan to give treatments that remove or block plaque formation at this early stage of the disease's progression and monitor subjects to see not only if the plaques can be prevented or reduced, but also whether other Alzheimer's biomarkers measured in the study improve.

Primarily funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH), the DIAN partnership is researching the rare, familial form of Alzheimer's disease that can cause symptoms to appear in affected people in their 30s and 40s--decades earlier than the more common form that typically occurs after age 65.

"These exciting findings are the first to confirm what we have long suspected, that disease onset begins years before the first sign of cognitive decline or memory loss," said Laurie Ryan, PhD, clinical trials program director at the National Institute on Aging, part of the NIH. "And while DIAN participants are at risk for the rare, genetic form of the disease, insights gained from the study will greatly inform our understanding of late-onset Alzheimer's disease."

Because individuals with these inherited forms of Alzheimer's are widely dispersed geographically, there are too few at any one center to conduct extensive research. That led DIAN principal investigator John C. Morris, MD, the Harvey A. and Dorismae Hacker Friedman Distinguished Professor of Neurology at Washington University, and his team to form the network four years ago.

"These new results could never have been gathered without the collaborative teamwork and dedication of our DIAN partners at institutions across the United States and in the United Kingdom and Australia," says Morris, who also is director of the Charles F. and Joanne Knight Alzheimer's Disease Research Center at Washington University.

Other results from the new study include:

*Elevated spinal fluid levels of tau, a structural protein in brain cells, appear 15 years before Alzheimer's symptoms.

*Shrinkage in key brain structures becomes discernible 15 years before symptoms.

*Decreases in the brain's use of the sugar glucose and slight impairments in a specific type of memory are detectable 10 years before symptoms.

Researchers also tested participants from DIAN families who do not have any of the mutations that cause inherited Alzheimer's.

"Family members without the Alzheimer's mutations have no detected change in the markers we tested," Bateman says. "It's striking how normal the Alzheimer's markers are in family members without a mutation."

Bateman is leading the development of Alzheimer's prevention and treatment trials in DIAN participants. He and his colleagues hope to launch trials later this year.

Funding from the National Institute on Aging supported this research.

Episcopal approval of same-sex blessings: Will it hurt church's global ties?

The Episcopal Church this week authorized blessings for same-sex couples ? a move at odds with the Anglican Communion, which the church belongs to, and some other Protestant denominations.

By G. Jeffrey MacDonald,?Correspondent / July 11, 2012

The Episcopal Church on Tuesday became the largest US church to authorize blessings for same-sex couples. The historic step marks a victory for activists, observers say, but stands to hamper the church?s already-strained international relationships.

At the General Convention in Indianapolis, 78 percent of laity and 76 percent of clergy in the House of Deputies voted to support the new liturgy Tuesday. This followed the lead of the church?s House of Bishops, which gave its approval Monday.

The vote equips priests and congregations, starting Dec. 2, to use an official church resource to bless lifelong commitments made by same-sex couples. Usage is restricted: Congregations and priests must first secure their bishop?s permission to use it, and it may not be used in civil marriage ceremonies. But proponents were jubilant nonetheless.

?For the church to say, ?This is an active part of our life in ministry, and we support this,? is an extraordinarily important step,? said the Very Rev. Katherine Hancock Ragsdale, president of Episcopal Divinity School in Cambridge, Mass. ?It shows that when this church says it welcomes all people, it means it.?

With this week?s votes, the 2 million member Episcopal Church goes where some (though not all) other Protestant denominations have hesitated to tread. Just last week, the Presbyterian Church (USA) narrowly defeated efforts to redefine marriage in its constitution to include gay couples. In May, the United Methodist Church reaffirmed its teaching that same-sex relationships are incompatible with Christian teaching. The Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, meanwhile, permits same-sex ceremonies but has not created a rite for blessing them.

Yet since 2005, the 1-million-member United Church of Christ has supported same-sex blessings.

Unlike other Protestant groups, the Episcopal Church belongs to a worldwide church that has called for a moratorium on same-sex blessings. The 80-million-member Anglican Communion includes the Episcopal Church among its 34 provinces. Some fear this week?s adoption of a same-sex liturgy will add further strain to already-frayed relationships.

?It means the Episcopal Church is now separating itself that much more from the Anglican Communion,? says Hood College historian David Hein, co-author of ?The Episcopalians,? a standard history of the church.??The American Episcopal Church is trying to set itself up as a separate denomination, although they would claim that they?re not.?

The Episcopal Church has spent decades cultivating closer ties with other Christian groups, most notably Lutherans, Roman Catholics, and Orthodox churches. Authorizing a same-sex liturgy could spell trouble for these ecumenical relationships, observers say. In 2010, the Anglican Communion asked Episcopalians to resign their posts in ecumenical dialogues because their church had defied the moratorium on same-sex blessings.

But activists are nonetheless celebrating a victory, even if it brings costs.

?We are not going to be blackmailed into bigotry against our gay and lesbian brothers and sisters in order to maintain a unity that requires uniformity,? says the Rev. Susan Russell, senior associate at All Saints Church in Pasadena, Calif.

Supporters of the new liturgy don?t expect it to cause another wave of conservative departures along the lines of what the church saw after the 2003 consecration of V. Gene Robinson as the Episcopal Church?s first openly gay bishop. That row over sexuality issues helped spawn the 4-year-old, theologically conservative Anglican Church in North America, which has attracted more than 800 congregations, including hundreds from the Episcopal Church.

?The issue that?s causing the [Episcopal Church?s decline] is not the inclusion of gay and lesbian people,? Ms. Russell says. ?The problem has been the fighting about it.... We?ll have great energy for proclaiming the Good News to everyone once we?ve put these inclusion wars behind us.?

Others, however, aren?t convinced that growing consensus around same-sex issues signals a brighter future. The Episcopal Church has lost 44 percent of its members since 1965, Mr. Hein notes, even though the US population has been growing during that period. He expects decline to continue.

?They?re losing 1,000 members a week,? Hein says. ?The Episcopal Church has now positioned itself way out there on the edge with the United Church of Christ, which is extremely liberal and also losing members.?

Make Your Business Grow With An Animated Video For Website

Websites! The name immediately flashes photographs and texts in one's mind. They could be dynamic as well as static. But when everyone starts getting one for their business it becomes logical to take it to a new, high profound level. The question is how to do that? Just by adding an animated web video to it. Animated web videos are going strong these days; they have redefined the way marketing of a product had been done until now. Promoting a business with plain simple websites no longer create a buzz with people. An animated video for website is a must these days. They can popularize a product among the large audience right at the day of its launch.
The various advantages associated with an animated web video are:
Unlike texts, they can portray a 2 as well as 3 dimensional view of a product. This becomes important when the customer to be wooed sits far away from the place of selling point of the business. He can be surely interested in seeing a product from all the angles before making a purchase of it. These videos cannot only launch but also give a demonstration of a product.
They can also be made to go viral, that is, they can be made in such a way that the chances of them being shared by several people increases manifold. To achieve this objective, an animated video for website is made short and filled with cartoon characters, who remains in the memory of viewers for a much longer time.
The way they communicate a message makes them the easiest way to do that. They don't make viewers feel a strain of getting informed.

They also reduce the need of texts and the number of pages on a website. After having them on a website, a website doesn't even require to have all those dynamic features to attract the attention of anyone.
Having them on websites also increases their search engine optimization chances. According to Forrester research Video SEO is 53 times more likely to drive a 1st page search result than traditional SEO. This means a lot to businesses who always look forward to popularize themselves among a large audience.
Web videos are helping not only the big and cash rich businesses but also those who are new and have little working capital at their disposal. They can be made differently for different purposes. In today's internet age there importance cannot be ignored.

OSCAR THE WONDERFISH: PETS IN PRESCHOOL ? "FLIGHTS ...

Met Oscar, our new classroom pet!

Now, you?may be thinking that Oscar has been named after the infamous Oscar the Grouch from ?Sesame Street?.??However, as?grouchy as our Oscar?may look, and sometimes behave when he is hungry,?this is not the case. Oscar is?in fact,?an Oscar fish (Astronotus?ocellatus).

Oscar fish are?rambunctious tropical South American fish?that?are well known for?their strong personality and intelligence. Far from being?timid fish, they will learn to recognise their owner and eventually?accept food directly?from their hand.??This, combined with their tendency to be playful,?has earned them the nickname of??aquatic puppies?.?Their average life span?is between 10-18 years, however, some?specimens have been known to ?live for over 20 years. One of the?unique behavioural patterns displayed by Oscars, is?their tendency to play?dead on occasions.?This?behaviour is instinctive,?and is a?tactic used to catch smaller fish in the wild.?They may also play?dead?if they feel threatened by?a larger?stronger fish, thus?demonstrating submissive behaviour.

So what do we feed Oscar? ?Well, he has a very?good appetite?and loves:

Earthworms

Bloodworms (frozen in little blocks)

Tropical fish Pellets

&

Insects (eg. crickets)

Even stray fingers that might make their way sneakily into the tank. So it is important to let children know that he may bite!

Oscar came to our preschool as a gift from one of our preschool families (their son is in the photographs?below).? Their home had become so over stocked with a menagerie of animals that Oscar needed a new home.? In Australia, the new EYLF(early years?learning framework)?and NQF(National Regulations)?highlight the importance of connecting children with nature and providing them with opportunities to explore relationships with?and discover the interdependence of living things. So naturally we embraced Oscar with open arms!? We were so fortunate as he came complete with his tank and stand. Wow!

When Oscar arrived at our centre, we had a group-time devoted to getting to know him. The children were captivated by Oscar and asked many questions (and the questions continue!) A small group of interested children helped me to google some information so that we could answer some of the questions the children had posed, such as: ?What does he eat??, ?Where does he come from??, ?Does he bite?? and ?Where?s his Mummy?? Although the children where unable to read the articles we found on the net and required my assistance, the process did convey a very important message to them about being able to read to source information that is of interest to them.

With interest focused firmly on Oscar, I did something that I rarely do, I placed ?pre-cut? fish shapes on the collage shelves as a provocation for the children to discover and use as they felt free to do. I usually steer clear of anything that has the ?sting? of being to teacher directed but in this instance, the outcome was very rewarding for at least two children.

Several children discovered the fish shapes and used them in the collage area, but the two children featured in these photographs, thought outside the square and saw them as an opportunity?to document Oscars appearance through careful observation. Wonderful!

The little boy featured here very rarely engages with drawing and writing materials, but his interest?in Oscar created the desire to record some information about him.?Fantastic! And perhaps the pre-cut shape in this instance,?provided just the right ?scaffolding? to?move him?beyond his aversion to drawing and writing.?He carefully noted and observed the markings on Oscars body using stripes and dots and?added fins and an eye. Only one eye, so he?WAS drawing from observation, not memory!

His fish drawing then came alive as it interacted in conversation with Oscar!

Here are two wonderful stories to read to children that also carry important messages about how to care for their pet fish.

And if you are interested in reading some more about animals in preschool, you can find out about keeping Yabbies and invitiing Wild Action along by following the links.

Nora Ephron Memorial: Tom Hanks, Rita Wilson, Rosie O'Donnell Pay Tribute

The mood was somber at Lincoln Center?s Alice Tully Hall on Monday as a crowd of about 800 filed into the New York City landmark to celebrate the life and work of Nora Ephron, who died suddenly last month at age 71 from pneumonia brought on by acute myeloid leukemia. But as the lights dimmed and a stream of family members and famous friends took the stage to share memories of Ephron, making the intimate auditorium reverberate with laughter and applause, it quickly became clear Ephron's memorial would be hilarious and heartfelt. For the blazingly witty Ephron, it couldn?t have been a more fitting tribute.

?Don?t be afraid to be funny,? said Martin Short, who was the first to take the stage, of the instructions Ephron?s son Jacob Bernstein had given him in advance of the memorial.

The 10 speakers who followed, including director-producer Mike Nichols, sister Delia Ephron and Rosie O?Donnell, took the edict to heart, with hysterical send-ups of Ephron and stories that would have delighted the legendary writer-director-producer.

Her sister Delia lovingly remembered how Nora had kidnapped a landlord to secure a lease during Delia?s early days in New York. Washington Post columnist Richard Cohen recalled the time she faced down rude waiters in Naples when they served her ?pizza a l? dreck." And Tom Hanks and wife Rita Wilson performed a he-said, she-said imitation of an average night with Ephron and her husband of 28 years, Nick Pileggi. (Pileggi did not speak at the service.)

Among the other themes at Ephron?s memorial: her talents as a Renaissance woman (?She was a latter-day, urbane Mark Twain. And she could cook,? said Cohen); her seemingly endless bandwidth for new friends (She was ?the hub of a friendship wheel,? said an emotional Meryl Streep); and her utter devotion to sons Jacob and Max (?She was my best friend, my biggest cheerleader, and a total drill sergeant, which is basically what a great parent is supposed to be,? said Jacob).

All this fanfare was, to some extent, planned by Ephron. Before her June 26 death, she orchestrated many details of the memorial, including who would speak and for how long, filing her plans in a folder labelled "exit."

Given the scope of her talents (journalist, essayist, playwright, screenwriter, novelist, producer, director, blogger, creator of Huffington Post Divorce), it was no surprise that the collection of attendees gathered to celebrate Ephron amounted to a who?s who of the entertainment, media, politics and publishing worlds, including Arianna Huffington, Steven Spielberg, Scott Rudin, Jon Hamm, Meg Ryan, Steve Martin, Matthew Broderick, Sally Field, Diane von Furstenberg, Barry Diller, Charlie Rose, Tom Brokaw, Barbara Walters, Joy Behar, Diane Sawyer, Martha Stewart, Bette Midler, Rob Reiner, Sen. Al Franken, Mayor Michael Bloomberg, Tina Brown, Graydon Carter, Gay Talese and Gail Collins.

After the service, guests sipped pink champagne, conjuring Martin Short?s loving words from earlier that morning:

?I believe that when people pass, they zoom into the people that love them the most. So, if that?s the case, then all of us here have a piece of Nora. And that?s the way it should be. Because life would just seem all too mundane without her. And if she?s a part of us, we must be more like her: read everything, savor everything, talk to the person on your left, embrace laughter like it?s a drug, drink more pink champagne, and yes, brush up on your style.?

Obama pushing extension of middle-class tax cuts

(AP) ? President Barack Obama, eager to shift election-year attention away from the nation's lackluster jobs market, called on Congress Monday to extend tax cuts for only low and middle income earners while allowing taxes to increase for families that make more than $250,000 a year.

"Let's not hold the vast majority of Americans and our economy hostage while we debate the merits of another tax cut for the wealthy," said Obama, flanked by a dozen people the White House said would benefit from the middle class-oriented tax cut extension.

Obama wants Congress to pass a one-year extension of the Bush-era tax cuts for households making less than $250,000 before they expire at the end of the year. He said the outcome of his November election contest with Republican rival Mitt Romney would then determine the fate of the tax cuts for higher income earners.

"My opponent will fight to keep them in place. I will fight to end them," he said.

White House spokesman Jay Carney said Obama "would not sign" a bill that extended the whole range of tax cuts in full.

Obama has long supported expiration of the tax cuts for those making more than $250,000. But the White House and the president's re-election team are reviving his arguments now as a way to paint congressional Republicans as obstructionists and Romney as a protector of the wealthy, suggesting the GOP push for an across-the-board extension of the tax cuts puts the middle class at risk.

The president's announcement also follows Friday's dismal jobs report, which showed the nation's unemployment rate stubbornly stuck at 8.2 percent.

Romney supports extending the tax cuts for all income earners. His campaign spokeswoman Andrea Saul said Monday that Obama's proposal amounted to a "massive tax increase" and proved that the president "doesn't have a clue how to get America working again and help the middle class."

The contours of the tax debate are largely the same as they were when the cuts were due to expire at the end of 2010. While Obama opposed an extension for higher income earners then as well, he ultimately agreed to full two-year extension, in part to win concessions for other legislation.

Democrats see the tax debate as part of a larger coordinated attack on Romney, which includes intensifying calls for him to explain offshore bank accounts and release several years of tax returns.

The strategy is aimed at portraying Romney, whose personal wealth could exceed $250 million, as disconnected from middle-class voters.

Romney aides say the Democratic attacks on the presumptive GOP nominee's wealth an "unfounded character assault."

Romney hasn't shirked from his wealth in the face of renewed Democratic criticism. He held a $50,000 per person fundraisers Sunday in the Hamptons, New York's exclusive string of waterfront communities on Long Island's South Shore.

Romney aides also announced that the campaign and the Republican National Committee raised a combined $106 million in June, the former Massachusetts governor's biggest monthly haul so far. The Obama campaign and the Democratic National Committee raised $71 million last month.

Republican lawmakers immediately balked at Obama's call for a partial extension.

"No one should see an income tax hike next year ? not families, not small businesses and other job creators," said Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky.

The president's pitch may also face some opposition from congressional Democrats. House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., and Sen. Charles Schumer, D-N.Y., a member of his party's Senate leadership, have both advocated denying the tax cut extension to those making above $1 million annually.

Extending the tax cuts only for households making below $250,000 costs the government about $800 billion less over 10 years than extending them for everyone. The full cuts cost the government about $4.5 trillion over a decade.

Obama was to continue the tax debate Tuesday during a campaign trip to Iowa. His re-election team was also promoting the president's tax policy at a series of events this week in battleground states, including New Hampshire, Colorado and Nevada.

The Bush-era tax cuts are due to expire at the end of the year unless Congress votes to extend them. Economists worry that across-the-board tax increases, along with automatic spending cuts also scheduled to take hold at year's end, could be a blow to the shaky U.S. economy.

China boosts state firms as entrepreneurs struggle

(AP) ? Reformers say China needs more entrepreneurs like Liu Peijian. His chain of six furniture stores employs 60 people. But Beijing's response to the deepest economic slump since the 2008 crisis is to pump money into state industry, leaving businesspeople like Liu who create jobs to fend for themselves.

Across town from Liu's office is a project that exemplifies China's mini-stimulus: A 69.6 billion yuan ($11 billion steel) mill being built by a government company and financed by state-owned banks that lend little to the private sector. It will employ 5,000 people ? or one job for each $2.2 million of investment.

"We get no government help," said Liu, as his office air conditioner struggled against the muggy heat of this southern city. "But we're a small company, and small companies shouldn't bother the government."

Spending like that of Baosteel Group, owner of the Zhanjiang mill, is expected to help push up economic growth later this year. But the emphasis on state industry that creates few jobs will come at a longer-term cost, setting back efforts to reduce reliance on investment and generate self-sustaining growth powered by consumer spending.

The strategy will further entrench subsidy-guzzling government companies that dominate industries from oil to telecoms. That might hamper reforms the World Bank and others say are needed to keep the economy growing by curbing state industry and nurturing free-market competition and more dynamic private companies.

"When the economy gets into trouble, all those good intentions get thrown out the window, and we revert to Plan A, which is always to encourage more investment and ensure that funds keep flowing to state-owned companies," said Mark Williams, chief Asia economist for Capital Economics.

Beijing has cut interest rates twice since the start of June and reduced fuel prices as it tries to buoy growth that declined to 8.1 percent in the first quarter. It has promised more spending on low-cost housing, airports and other public works. That will pour money into state-owned construction companies and suppliers of steel and cement.

Baosteel's Zhanjiang mill is one of a series of industrial projects the government approved in May as stimulus measures after previously blocking them to prevent overinvestment in unneeded facilities. State-owned Wuhan Iron & Steel Group also received approval for a new mill state media say will cost more than 60 billion yuan ($9.5 billion).

Both are to be financed by state banks, which still channel at least 80 percent of lending to state companies despite China's three decades of market-oriented reforms and the growth of private business that has driven its economic boom.

Leaders including Premier Wen Jiabao have promised to help the private sector with more bank lending and other measures, but entrepreneurs say they have yet to see changes.

"I have never been able to get a bank loan," said Deng Mingxin, owner of a company in Changshu, a city northwest of Shanghai, that makes components for zippers. He said state companies appear to get credit easily while bank employees expect bribes to approve loans for private borrowers.

Deng's workforce has shrunk by two-thirds to 10 people over the past six months as employees left after wage hikes of up to 30 percent failed to keep pace with rising living costs. He said he is considering moving to lower-cost Vietnam.

"I am disappointed at the situation in China," he said. "This is unfair."

Today's state companies and their relationship to the private sector have changed drastically from the era of central planning.

Beijing cut back state industry in the late 1990s, wiping out tens of millions of jobs. Then a new generation of leaders began in 2005 to build up elite companies such as oil giant PetroChina Ltd., phone carrier China Mobile Ltd. and Bank of China Ltd. to control industries deemed strategic.

State companies benefit from monopolies, low-cost bank loans, free land and other favors. Instead of competing with private companies, state firms extract money from them by controlling access to oil, electric power, phone service and other essential resources.

Communist leaders say China needs big companies that can compete globally. But the system also serves a political goal by providing a source of jobs and money to reward the party's supporters and keep it in power in a rapidly changing society.

Beijing's 4 trillion yuan ($586 billion) stimulus in response to the 2008 crisis added to the growth of state industry. Government-owned construction and other enterprises received the bulk of that while thousands of small manufacturers and other private companies went bankrupt.

State industry growth also has been driven by official directives that say companies in steel, energy and other industries deemed strategic must have at least 50 percent government ownership. In some cases, private entities were forced into being acquired by state companies.

Estimates of the portion of the economy controlled by non-private companies range from 30 percent to as much as 50 percent if entities such as worker cooperatives are included.

State industry's vast wealth ? and high pay for executives who are political appointees, not risk-taking entrepreneurs ? is fueling public resentment.

The top tier of 119 state companies directly controlled by the Cabinet received subsidies worth an estimated 7.5 trillion yuan ($1.2 trillion) in 2001-09 in the form of low-cost land, bank loans and other resources, according to the Unirule Institute of Economic Research, an independent group in Beijing.

"People are gradually becoming aware that state-owned enterprises are inefficient and unfair institutions that occupy the people's resources to serve their own circle," said Unirule director Sheng Hong.

"The high levels of government and the ruling party increasingly recognize this," Sheng said. "On the other hand, state-owned enterprises are a huge interest group. They have a lot of political influence and money."

Zhanjiang, in Guangdong province, the heart of China's export-driven manufacturing industries, reflects the conflict between the Communist Party's need for a robust private sector and its determination to build up state-owned companies.

The backbone of the local economy is private factories that employ thousands of people making furniture and traditional Chinese medicines or processing seafood.

Liu, who named his company Yi Pian Hong after a 1960s postage stamp that shows communist radicals holding aloft Mao Zedong's Little Red Book, expects this year's sales to be comparable to 2011. That is better than some competitors, but below the 20 to 40 percent annual growth his 5-year-old company is used to. The company pays for its financing needs out of revenues or credit from suppliers.

"Certainly, it's hard to get a bank loan," Liu said.

At another furniture company, a manager said sales might be down 10 percent due to government curbs on housing sales that were imposed to cool surging prices. He asked not to be identified by name because he was not authorized to speak for his company.

The local branch of China's central bank said a survey of small businesses in Zhanjiang found 90 percent reported cash shortages or trouble credit.

Despite the prominence of private industry in Guangdong, only 12 percent of its bank lending goes to entrepreneurs, according to a speech by the province's deputy party secretary, Zhu Mingguo, reported by a party newspaper.

"The bigger state-owned companies can stay afloat because they have access to finance, and that means that they have a huge competitive advantage," said Williams. " So whether it just involves them taking market share or outright taking over the smaller firms, the result is, they come out the other end in a much stronger position."
