Nevada Interior department work supported 19,000 jobs

LAS VEGAS (AP) ? Department of the Interior officials say their agency's parks and other projects supported more than 19,000 Nevada jobs last fiscal year.

The federal agency says Monday that the 16 million visitors to national parks, wildlife refuges and other federal lands supported about 10,500 jobs, while energy and mineral development supported close to 6,000 jobs.

The department says Lake Mead National Recreation Area alone supported almost 2,500 jobs. That area sees about 7 million visitors a year.

Interior department officials say their agency's projects and sites made a nearly $2.4 billion impact on the Nevada economy.

Nationwide, they say the economic impact is $385 billion.

The Interior department's responsibilities include managing public lands and natural resources and working with Native American tribes.

Peterson says 'truth will surface'

nfl_a_jaguar_fans_576AP

The Jaguars know their tarps are a punch-line.

And they want to get rid of them.

Figuring out the right way to do it has become a tougher problem to solve.

New owner Shad Khan?s goal is to get rid of them, saying: ?To me, every day I look at the tarps, it is like underachieving, and I can?t wait to be able to do that [remove the tarps].?

Mark Lamping, the Jaguars president in charge of non-football operations, said an announcement?s coming in August about new features at EverBank Field. New video boards are coming, but maybe not until 2014.

But those tarps are still the first thing many see, and the biggest problem.

?We?re working on a number of ideas,? Lamping told Vito Stellino of the Florida Times-Union. ?We?d like to get something done this year, but maybe we won?t be able to. It needs to be a done in a way to enhance the fan experience as opposed to an advertising panel. We haven?t come up with a solution, but we?re working very hard.?

The Jags have an apparent, but complicated problem. They like what the tarps do, cutting the capacity of their stadium from a too-big-for-the-market 76,000 to a closer-to-just-right 67,246.

If they were the only tenants, they could just blow out those seats, install some kind of amenity and proceed happily. Problem is, that leaves the stadium (at least) 10,000 seats short of what they need for the annual Georgia-Florida game and the Gator Bowl if that game gets a lucky draw, meaning they can?t make permanent alterations.

Trying to come up with a system of platforms that don?t block the views from other seats and can sustain anything from concession stands to plazas to palm trees is proving more expensive than they thought.

?Putting tarps over seats does nothing for the fan experience and is a blatant reminder that there are seats under them,? Lamping said.

It?s also a blatant reminder that the Jaguars are held hostage by one extremely popular college football game a year, which limits their ability to improve their own product.

Web Content: 5 Genius Tips to Make Writing Content Easy | Angela ...

web content creation

Web content creation is an integral part of business these days. From email messages to website content, someone has to write it. If you dislike the chore, and can?t get out of it, you might as well make it easy on yourself.

Start by forgetting about ?writing.? I coach people in communication skills, and it amazes me how many excellent communicators tell me that they ?can?t write.?

You can. Here are some tips to turn you into a Web content genius.

1. Forget writing: do you like talking?

Start by forgetting that you ?can?t write.? Just talk. Dictation software will turn your chats with yourself into Web content; the software is easy to learn. These voice-to-text programs have a 98 per cent accuracy.

Once you get used to your dictation program, you?ll find that writing becomes a chore you enjoy.

Important: don?t try to censor yourself as you speak. You can edit and restructure the content later. Speak as if you were speaking to a friend.

I like to jot some notes before I dictate, but this is optional.

2. What do you wish customers knew about your business?

If you find it a challenge to come up with ideas for Web content, make a list of things you wish that customers knew about your business, and the products you sell. The first time you do this, you?ll be able to come up with several dozen ideas.

Keep adding to these ideas. Ask your colleagues what they wish customers knew.

3. Create a list of 20 questions customers have asked in the past month.

Want ideas for content you can create immediately? Talk to your customer service people. Ask them what questions they?re asked. In addition, ask them to keep a list of customers? questions.

If you have a database program, create a Knowledge Base database, and have all your staff record the questions they?re asked into the database.

Choose 20 questions which are asked most often, then write Web content around those questions.

4. Pick others? brains: have content brainstorming meetings.

For on-going content-creation ideas, ask for others? input into your Web content. Set up monthly meetings to brainstorm content.

Alternatively, ask for suggestions. Give bonuses to people whose suggestions you use.

Remember that you can ask customers for what information they would like to see on your website. Create a form, and add links to the form to your website.

5. Get out of your office: talk to your customers, suppliers, and other business people.

You?ll be amazed at what you learn when you talk to people. Ask customers what they find challenging about your website.

One client, who sells shoes, discovered that customers wanted to know more about the shoes ? how and where they were manufactured; the company?s policies on returns; better sizing information; and custom orders.

Ideas for Web content are everywhere. Forget about ?writing?, just communicate. Your customers will appreciate it, and your sales will go up.

Youth Venture Capital Fund; the Tricksters and the Tricked | Uganda ...

By Raymond Mujuni

A pack of rowdy youths running around with stolen, huge posho chunks at the city hall, is partly what the finance minister Maria Kiwanuka, had envisaged to shelf from Ugandan news scenery when she announced a 44bn fund to fight the youth unemployment in the 2011/12 budget.

The monies initially rose their way to fame as one of the multitudes of major government policies meant to please an already disgruntled populace. A redemption trap of political trickery however lay right ahead of the youth breather ready to engulf and wrestle down the initiative and play innocent thereafter.

The frequent restlessness prove not only miscalculated moves by youths to expect banks to bow to their needs ahead of profit, but also show a youth movement still basking in political trickery.

Venture capital fund from it?s architects is risk-funding to potential businesses and business ideas meant to address micro and macro-level economic turbulence like unemployment, product scarcity among others. In most cases of venture capital funding, two sets of funds are drafted for the beneficiaries, a seed fund is provided for potential business ideas then a major fund for already established business with prospects of huge growth over a short-time scale.

After knowing this, understanding the Uganda case seems to be hard, with millions of unemployed people, it would not be advisable for us to skip fast to major venture-capital funding worse-still for youths who barely have a business to run. Secondly, we can?t engulf all youths in the venture capital funding as this would require more monies which we don?t have and it is also an economic trap to have thousands of starter businesses which the government cannot bail out in cases of economic fixes.

So what is more advisable for the government, is to outsource in university graduates for brilliant business ideas whose inception can garner maximum employment, to award venture capital rather than leave banks do the thinking for the nation.

Venture capital is not an end in itself towards solving unemployment, further government policies like review of investors? plans to include citizen employment should also be explored.

There are examples of successful venture capital firms within the country like quality chemicals which is a major employer in the country.

If the concept of venture capital fund continue to be driven by political ambitions and bank profits, we are destined for further scenes of youths grabbing police food, tear-gas cannisters flying in every part of the country over youth fund and at the peak of all this instability which will further cast business in the country in uncertainity.

Netgear R6300 WiFi Router 802.11ac Dual Band Gigabit

Netgear?s R6300 WiFi Router 802.11ac Dual Band Gigabit ($199.99) introduces Netgear?s 11ac offering to the market. In a rather bold move, Netgear actually uses the ?802.11ac? standard in the name of this product, although 802.11ac is yet to be ratified and is not expected to be until sometime next year.

Which means the R6300 is a draft router and the second draft 11ac router I?ve tested. I?m not a big fan of draft 802.11x hardware. I remember some pretty quirky draft 802.11n routers. Today?s 802.11n routers are far better devices than their draft predecessors. It seems like wireless router manufacturers are eager to get 11ac routers on the market even in draft form.

Unfortunately, the R6300 performs like a draft router and falls a bit short of the excellence expected from Netgear, although as an 802.11n router running in N-only, performance is fine. An odd design and surprisingly underwhelming performance running in 11ac mode does not make this router one of Netgear?s best.

Specs and Design
Netgear deviated from the traditional round-edged look of its N750 and N900 dual-band routers. The R6300 has angular corners and sits upright in an attached base at about a 45 degree angle. It?s a bizarre design and resembles a large digital photo frame or some type of media player. It looks like a device meant to be put on display?which a router typically isn?t. The worst part of the design is you are limited with its placement. Although you can remove the base, you can?t operate it horizontally because of the way the cables sit in the power and LAN/WAN ports. It?s also not wall-mountable.

The side panel has a Wi-Fi on/off button, a WPS button and a USB 2.0 port. The rear panel has a second USB 2.0 port, 4 Gigabit LAN ports, the WAN port, and the power button. The USB ports support both printers and external storage, although lack of USB 3.0 in a supposed future-proofed 11ac router is disappointing.

The base has rubber footing to keep the device in place, but this is a large router and is not going to move around much even with cables connected. The R6300 measures 8.07 by 10.04 by 3.03 inches (HWD) and weighs 1.44 pounds.

The R6300 supports up to 450 Mbps on the 2.4 GHz band and up to 1300 Mbps on the 5 GHz band. Netgear recommends using the router with 3x3 stream capable wireless adapters such as the Intel Centrino 6300/6500 or a 3x3 802.11ac adapter. The problem is there aren?t any 802.11 ac adapters on the market yet, although Netgear has the A6200 Wi-Fi dual band 802.11ac USB adapter coming soon.

Other internal specs include 128 MB flash memory, 128 MB RAM and internal radio amplifiers. Externally, Netgear seems to have taken a cue from Cisco Linksys? latest dual-band routers, because the R6300 like some of the Cisco Linksys devices features a glowing company logo on the housing when the device is powered. After hours of uptime the R6300 runs quiet and very cool.

Setup
Once the R6300 is wired to a broadband modem and a computer is connected to one of its LAN ports, you can go to https://routerlogin.net to open the Genie management software for configuration. The router ships pre-configured with SSID for both bands and passkeys.

The Genie setup wizard detects and sets up your network connection. Next, the Genie software utility is downloaded and installed on the local machine. The Genie software provides a number of apps and widgets to manage and monitor the router. Genie opens to a dashboard view displaying Internet status, wireless connections, and a network map (which graphically shows how and which devices are connected in your network).

From Genie, you can perform basic setup tasks such as configuring Airprint to allow iOS devices to print to a connected printer. You can setup parental control or use some of the diagnostic tools provided in the software for troubleshooting connection issues.

?You can also access more advanced router settings. Within advanced settings you can change wireless configurations, IPv6, QoS and more.

Overall, Genie is a pleasant interface to work in and easy to navigate through. One feature that seems like a waste of system resources is located under the Wireless widget in the dashboard view. The Genie software displays the SSIDs and passkeys? as an animated endless scroll. What exactly is the purpose of that and who thought it was a great idea to have a network's password scroll as some sort of decoration by default,?within an interface?

With the R6300, you also have other advanced configuration options such as operating the device as a wireless repeater, setting up port forwarding and port triggering, DDNS and extensive IPv6 support that includes IPv6 DHCP and 6to4 tunneling (which allows IPv6 traffic to transmit over an IPv4 network).

Officials: Romney, RNC haul in $100 million-plus

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) ? Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney and the Republican National Committee combined to raise more than $100 million in June, two GOP officials said Thursday, a striking number for a challenger who for the second straight month outpaced President Barack Obama and the Democrats.

Given the pace of Obama's heavy advertising spending and Romney's focus on husbanding his resources, the imminent Republican nominee's fundraising put him on pace to reach Obama's impressive cash reserves this summer, just as most voters begin tuning in for the fall campaign.

Romney, while enjoying a financial bounty with money raised directly for his campaign and the RNC, was also getting help from outside "super" political committees working in his favor. Taken together, the groups' fundraising strength means Romney could have a permanent financial advantage over Obama, who could be the first president in history to be outspent by his opponent.

The totals showed Romney picking up the pace after working in April and May to bring Republicans together following a bruising battle for the Republican nomination. The campaign in concert with the RNC had set $100 million fundraising goals for June and July, and appeared to have met the first.

Obama and Romney have raised more than $350 million combined toward the election ? a pace expected to exceed $1 billion by November. That's factoring in hundreds of millions in expected contributions to political parties, joint-fundraising efforts, super PACs and nonprofit organizations.

Romney officials have privately said the governor's national committee was on track to raise $150 million in a period spanning roughly April through June. Those officials told donors there were few states that haven't broken internal fundraising records, and they expressed confidence the campaign could close its cash-on-hand gap with Obama's re-election effort.

Meanwhile, a joint-fundraising committee with the GOP, known as the Romney Victory Fund, has hosted more than 100 events so far, including a Boston fundraiser on May 24 that pulled in $7 million. Romney starting raising money with the Republican Party in April.

Obama himself broke fundraising records four years ago, pulling in $750 million for his last campaign, including a record $150 million in September 2008. To be sure, Obama also has super PACs working in his favor ? notably Priorities USA Action, run by a former White House aide ? although the groups have yet to catch up to the fundraising benchmarks of their GOP counterparts.

Pro-Romney super PACs like American Crossroads and Restore Our Future have spent tens of millions of dollars on TV ads critical of Obama in key states, and the groups expect to spend more as November approaches.

The Obama campaign has spent nearly $71 million on advertising from April through last week, part of an overall $90 million effort by Democrats on the presidential race, according to ad-spending reports provided to The Associated Press. Romney's campaign has spent far less, $15.6 million, with super PACs making up the rest of the roughly $68 million for Republicans.

Obama leads narrowly in a number of closely targeted battleground and swing states. But Romney has crept closer to the Democrat in national head-to-head polls since essentially locking up the nomination in April.

Neither Obama nor the Democratic National Committee has released what they raised in June. However, it's expected that they will not report having raised $100 million.

In May, Romney and the RNC raised a combined $76.8 million, while Obama and the DNC brought in $60 million. A full accounting of the campaigns' finances is due to the Federal Election Commission by July 20.

Romney's campaign declined to verify the total, which was confirmed by Republican officials who asked not to be named because they were not authorized to release the information. Campaign officials said they planned to release their fundraising totals for June next week. Politico first reported the figure.

Obama spokesman Ben LaBolt said Romney was leaking the figure to distract from other issues.

"Americans are less concerned about how much money he raised to get himself elected and more interested in what he would do after repealing health reform," LaBolt said. He was referring to Romney's pledge to repeal the health care law enacted by Obama in 2010, which the Supreme Court upheld last week.
