NEWTOWN, Connecticut (Reuters) - Twenty schoolchildren were slaughtered by a heavily armed gunman who opened fire at a suburban elementary school in Connecticut on Friday, killing at least 27 people including himself in the one of the worst mass shootings in U.S. history.
The 20-year-old gunman, who law enforcement sources identified as Adam Lanza, fired what witnesses described as dozens of shots at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut, which serves children from ages 5 to 10.
Authorities found 18 children and seven adults, including the gunman, dead at the school, and two children were pronounced dead later after being taken to a hospital. Another adult was found dead at a related crime scene in Newtown, bringing the toll to 28, state police Lieutenant Paul Vance said.
As reports of the shooting spread, panicked parents rushed to the school searching for their children as students covered in blood were being carried out of the building.
President Barack Obama, wiping away tears and pausing to collect his emotions in an address to the nation, mourned the "beautiful little kids between the ages of 5 and 10 years old" who were killed.
"Our hearts are broken today, for the parents, and grandparents, sisters and brothers of these little children and for the families of the adults who were lost," Obama said, his voice cracking.
"Our hearts are broken for the parents of the survivors as well, for as blessed as they are to have their children home tonight, they know that their children's innocence has been torn away from them too early and there are no words that will ease their pain," said Obama, who has two young daughters.
"Evil visited this community today," Connecticut Governor Dannel Malloy told reporters.
The New York Times reported that the gunman walked into a classroom where his mother was a teacher, shot his mother and then 20 students, most in the same classroom, before shooting five other adults and killing himself. One other person was shot at the school and survived, the Times said.
Other media reports said the gunman's mother was found dead at a house nearby.
Adam Lanza's brother, Ryan Lanza, was "either in custody or being questioned," a law enforcement source said.
The gunman was dead inside the school, Vance said. The Times reported he used a Sig Sauer and a Glock, both handguns, and said police also found at the scene a Bushmaster .223 M4 carbine, a rifle, that they believe belonged to him.
The holiday season tragedy was the second shooting rampage in the United States this week and the latest in a series of mass killings this year, and was certain to revive a debate about U.S. gun laws.
POLICE, PARENTS SWARM SCHOOL
Chaos struck as children gathered in their classrooms for morning meetings at Sandy Hook Elementary in Newtown, a wealthy, wooded suburb of 27,000 in Fairfield County, about 80 miles northeast of New York City.
Images from the scene showed children being led away in single file, each child's hands clutching the shoulders of the one in front. Police wearing body armor and carrying rifles swarmed the scene and locked down the school.
Distraught parents converged, frantically searching for their daughters and sons. Neighbors and friends wandered in shock, looking for information.
"We can't believe this," said Kinga Walsh, 47, a mother of four who was Christmas shopping when she heard there had been a shooting at the school. "Newtown is a quiet, nice place. It's a small, tight-knit community."
Nearly 12 hours later, the bodies of the dead children, adults and gunman remained in the school awaiting identification.
Obama ordered flags flown at half-staff at U.S. public buildings.
"As a country, we have been through this too many times," Obama said, ticking off a list of recent shootings.
"We're going to have to come together and take meaningful action to prevent more tragedies like this, regardless of the politics," Obama said in apparent reference to the influence of the National Rifle Association over members of Congress.
Obama remains committed to trying to renew a ban on assault weapons, White House spokesman Jay Carney said.
The Connecticut shootings appear certain to trigger renewed debate over U.S. gun laws. New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg, founder of the advocacy group Mayors Against Illegal Guns, said it was "almost impossible to believe that a mass shooting in a kindergarten class could happen.
"We need immediate action. We have heard all the rhetoric before. What we have not seen is leadership - not from the White House and not from Congress," he said. "That must end today."
Outside the White House gates, about 200 people rallied on a cold evening in favor of gun restrictions.
French President Francois Hollande, in an open letter to Obama, said he was "horrified" by the shootings. British Prime Minister David Cameron said, "It is heartbreaking to think of those who have had their children robbed from them at such a young age, when they had so much life ahead of them."
U.N. Secretary General Ban Ki-moon expressed his condolences and called the targeting of children "heinous and unthinkable."
BLOODIED CHILDREN LEAVE SCHOOL
Vance said the shootings took place in two rooms of Sandy Hook Elementary. Witnesses reported hearing dozens of shots; some said as many as 100 rounds.
"It was horrendous," said parent Brenda Lebinski, who rushed to the school where her daughter is in the third grade. "Everyone was in hysterics - parents, students. There were kids coming out of the school bloodied."
Lebinski said a mother who was at the school during the shooting told her a "masked man" entered the principal's office and may have shot the principal.
Melissa Murphy, who lives near the school, monitored events on a police scanner.
"I kept hearing them call for the mass casualty kit and scream, ?Send everybody! Send everybody!'" she said. "It doesn't seem like it can be really happening. I feel like I'm in shock."
The toll exceeded that of one of the most notorious U.S. school shootings, the 1999 rampage at Columbine High School in Littleton, Colorado, where two teenagers killed 13 students and staff before killing themselves.
A girl described to NBC Connecticut hearing seven loud "booms" while she was in gym class. Other children began crying and teachers moved the students to an office, she said.
"A police officer came in and told us to run outside and so we did," the unidentified girl said on camera.
The United States has seen a number of shooting rampages this year, most recently in Oregon, where a gunman killed two people and then himself at a shopping mall on Tuesday.
The deadliest came in July at a midnight screening of a Batman film in Colorado that killed 12 people and wounded 58.
In 2007, 32 people were killed at Virginia Tech university in the deadliest act of criminal gun violence in U.S. history.

JOHANNESBURG (AP) ? Where is Nelson Mandela?
As the 94-year-old patriarch of South Africa's democracy entered his seventh day of hospitalization Friday for a recurring lung infection, confusion grew as government officials appeared to contradict themselves over where he is being treated.
With the government refusing to say where Mandela is, concern grew across this nation of 50 million people about the health of the anti-apartheid icon.
Mandela, admitted Saturday to a hospital, was thought to have been at 1 Military Hospital near South Africa's capital, Pretoria, after Defense Minister Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula said she visited the leader there Monday. But when local media reported that Mandela wasn't at that hospital Thursday night, presidential spokesman Mac Maharaj declined to give the whereabouts of the ailing politician.
"President Mandela is being treated at a Pretoria hospital as said from the first statement we issued," Maharaj said. "We have refrained from disclosing the hospital in order to ensure privacy and also to allow doctors space to do their work of caring for (him) without interruptions or undue pressure."
It was not immediately clear if Mandela had been moved or if he had been at a different facility during his entire seven-day hospitalization, his longest since 2001, when he underwent radiation therapy after being diagnosed with prostate cancer.
On Monday, addressing journalists after her visit, Mapisa-Nqakula said: "We confirm that former President Mandela is in (the) hospital, 1 Military Hospital, and he's doing very, very well."
Sonwabo Mbananga, a defense department spokesman, said Friday that "the minister is not going to clarify anything" about her remarks Monday and declined to comment further.
On Friday, journalists saw a convoy of presidential security cars and an ambulance leave a private Pretoria hospital and later arrive at 1 Military Hospital. However, it could not be immediately determined if the convoy had anything to do with Mandela's care.
Speaking to The Associated Press on Friday afternoon, Maharaj again declined to identify which hospital Mandela was staying at, saying officials are "trying to protect his privacy." When asked about the defense minister's comments, Maharaj said the presidency had been consistent in avoiding identifying the hospital and declined to comment further.
Mandela "has been comfortable the past 24 hours and continues to receive care," Maharaj said.
South Africa's government has said Mandela, initially admitted for medical tests, was being treated for a lung infection. Mandela has a history of lung problems, after falling ill with tuberculosis in 1988 toward the tail-end of his 27 years in prison before his release and being elected president. While doctors said at the time the disease caused no permanent damage to his lungs, medical experts say tuberculosis can cause problems years later for those infected.
Mandela had an acute respiratory infection in January 2011 and following the chaos surrounding Mandela's stay at a public hospital the South African military took charge of his care and the government took over control the information about his health.

Televangelist Pat Robertson, host of the Christian Broadcasting Network's "700 Club," accused President Barack Obama of being a "socialist" who wants to "destroy" America.
"[Obama] wouldn?t admit to being a socialist but that?s what it is,? Robertson said on his show Thursday. ?He has an agenda. Now Karl Rove was saying in an op-ed today that what the President is trying to do is set up the Republicans so they fight among themselves and therefore the party goes into disunity in the next election and Obama wins there. I don?t think he thinks that way. I think he thinks ideologically: 'I must cripple the capitalist class; I must cripple the business owners; I must destroy the free enterprise system in America.'?
Obama disputed charges of socialism in an interview with Miami's "Noticias Univision 23" Thursday when he was asked about Cuban-American voters who believe he favors "a socialist model for our country."
"The truth of the matter is that my policies are so mainstream that if I had set the same policies that I had back in the 1980s, I would be considered a moderate Republican," Obama said.
"I do believe that it makes sense that everyone in America, as rich as this country is, shouldn't go bankrupt because someone gets sick, so the things I believe in are essentially the same things your viewers believe in," Obama continued.

He had started to play A LOT of video games lately and is rarely interested in going out places with me. If I go and do something and leave him playing video games he gets angry at me. Its like he wants me in the house doing something else while he plays games...
In addition he smokes heaps of weed. I don't smoke at all, when we first got together he smoked a joint every night but that was all. I never said a word about it even though I don't smoke myself. Now he smokes so much more than that and he now smokes bongs. I hate bongs.
He says he is miserable with his job and doesn't feel intellectually stimulated. He is dissapointed at him self for dropping out of Uni and for never going back. He says that for the last 10 years since he left it is an ongoing cycle of hating his job and regret about Uni which makes him smoke more weed and drink more booze which dulls his motivation to change. I have said that I am more than happy to support him emotionally etc if he decides to go back to Uni but he says that its too late, hes too old, he doesn't want to give up weed yet, he doesn't want to have no money etc etc. He then clams up again and doesn't want to talk about it.
He knows that he is not happy, he knows what he needs to do to change but he wont. Smoking weed is more important.
And I daresay that the weed is effecting our sex life too..
