An NFL Player Says A 15-Day Jail Sentence Changed His Entire Outlook On Life

Share

When Jerome Simpson?a former wide receiver for the Cincinnati Bengals who just signed a deal with the Minnesota Vikings recently?was handed a 15-day jail sentence in early March after pleading guilty to having two pounds of marijuana shipped to his home in Kentucky last year, most people saw it as a slap on the wrist. ?Another rich and famous athlete gets off easy because he?s rich and famous,? most people thought. And, truthfully, they weren?t wrong. If Simpson wasn?t rich and famous, do you really think he would?ve received just 15 days in jail for his crime?

And yet, it appears that those 15 days in jail did the trick. Simpson was just released from jail and he says that he?s a changed person because of it. ?Things happen for a reason,? he told the Pioneer Press over the weekend. ?The man upstairs wanted me to change. It sucked I had to go through it that way. It made me a stronger, better person?Everybody makes mistakes. I just want people to?forgive me.?

He?s not just looking for forgiveness after serving his sentence, though. In addition to appealing to Vikings fans and asking for a second chance, Simpson also took the time to address how terrible jail really was when he spoke to the Pioneer Press.

?Those 15 days I spent in jail, it was terrible,? he said. ?It sucked. Any kids out there, that?s a place you don?t want to be. Somebody tells you when to wake up, when to make your bed, when to take a shower, when you can have a snack. That?s an obstacle you don?t want to gave. I want all kids to learn not to go down that path and to learn from me.?

So, is Simpson really a changed man? Well, only time will tell. He did, after all, just get out of jail and it?s not like he served such a long sentence that we can immediately tell that he?s a changed man. But, it does sound like his 15-day sentence did some good. Simpson wasn?t gone for very long, so people didn?t forget all about him. As a result, they can now relate to who he is both as a player and as a person and see how this whole episode affected him. Hopefully, he really did change. But, if not, at least he?s done his part to try and get others, specifically kids, to change.

So, it looks like it was actually a good thing that he only got a ?slap on the wrist,? huh?
